Consent comes in two forms. Explicit consent is when a person clearly and voluntarily agrees to something—typically by ticking a box, clicking an “I agree” button, or signing a form after being informed about what will happen. Implicit consent is inferred from a person’s actions or inaction rather than from a direct, affirmative choice. For privacy and data processing, explicit consent is preferred because it provides a definite, informed, unambiguous agreement. Relying on implicit consent can be risky since people might not fully understand what they’re agreeing to, and the agreement may not meet legal standards for scope or purpose. The other notions aren’t accurate because consent isn’t optional in many contexts, implicit consent isn’t always sufficient, and consent covers more than just sharing data.
